There are countless professional institutions that hold day or week courses designed to expand your knowledge in different fields or professions.Another way to use the extra day of free time would be to undertake a part-time degree course. This may seem like a huge investment of your time, but for someone who is looking to overhaul their skill set and develop the building blocks for an illustrious career, it is a great option. Gaining your first or maybe even your second degree will be particularly useful if you are at a stage in your career in which you feel you have plateaued.Recharge your batteriesGiving yourself an additional day away from work can have many health benefi ts including reduced stress levels, healthier eating, better exercise habits and a reduction in absences due to sickness. Consequently, as you begin to lead a healthier lifestyle youll become more alert at work.Theory is that this will lead to increased productivity during the hours that you are sitting behind your desk or on the road closing deals. The last thing you want is to feel overworked as that will only contribute to ill-health, which has a direct correlation with productivity in the workplace.

In the introductory sentence, it identifies the jobseeker as a highly experienced and versatile Mining Engineer. By emphasizing experience and versatility, it helps create a professional brand for the applicant, so its stronger than simply writing mining engineer. Although the summary is short, it points out the jobseekers focus on efficiency and commitment to green operations, so it gives recruiters and managers a snapshot of what this applicant can accomplish. Like the professional summary, the core qualifications section is often overlooked by jobseekers, but it is also an important parte of a strong resume. This mining engineer resume sample includes eight core qualifications, which is the maximum number that we recommend. Make sure you stick to pertinent qualifications, and be sure to mention any specific strengths that the job description mentions. This mining engineer resume sample demonstrates several best practices for the crucial work experience section. For instance, it lists relevant experience in reverse chronological order and uses succinct bullet points to showcase specific accomplishments. Notice how the jobseeker chose strong action verbs for each bullet point. Its much more effective to write that you developed more efficient transport systems than to write that you were involved with transport systems. Words like researched and optimized are much more effective than weaker alternative words and phrases like did and gaine d experience in. Crafting strong, action-oriented bullet points keeps your specific accomplishments from getting buried on the page. Note that the education section is succinct and quickly shows a reader the key information- the degree and university- without superfluous details. As a mining engineer with a professional or college degree, you dont need to include high school on your resume. Why You Need a Strong Mining Engineer ResumeWhile the Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates 6 percent employment growth for mining and geological engineers through 2024, this projected growth adds only 500 positions in the entire career category over this time period. Growth will depend on demands for mining operations and on international trade restrictions for mineral export, among other factors. This projected growth is good news for jobseekers, but it is still important to create a strong resume. As more and more companies outsource for their engineering needs rather than employ engineers dire ctly, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that recruiters and managers will increasingly look for qualified candidates who are a great fit for their engineering firms. Fortunately, you can create a professional document that portrays you as the best candidate for the job and helps you stand out from the crowd with our writing guidelines and mining engineer resume sample.Costly Mining Engineer Resume Mistakes To AvoidYou probably already know that you need to avoid the most obvious mistakes when creating your resume. Typos and grammatical errors dont belong in a professional document, for instance. However, there are other less obvious mistakes that can also cost you the job if you arent attentive.Your resume needs to showcase your accomplishments rather than simply describe your previous duties or responsibilities. Instead of creating a laundry list of responsibilities or a section that reads like a job description, focus on what you accomplished and what the benefits or outcome s of those accomplishments were. Finally, dont neglect the importance of core competencies, since recruiters and managers are often looking for specific technical skills and knowledge. Notice how the author of this mining engineer resume sample mentions specific knowledge of AutoCAD and familiarity with EPA codes and regulations. Failing to mention technical qualifications, especially those listed in the job description you are responding to, can cause a manager to skip over your application after a quick skim.ConclusionCrafting a strong resume takes time, especially in a field that demands specific technical expertise and education, but the effort pays off when you land the job you want. Our mining engineer resume sample and writing guide can help you showcase your skills and stand out from the competition. Make sure your resume is skimmable, showcases your most relevant qualifications, and emphasizes specific accomplishments from your professional experience.

The Friendish Workplace

The Friendish Workplace The Friendish Workplace When a supervisor is understood to be friendly, thats normally taken and offered as code for but not friends. To presume that you are friends with your boss (or even with a coworker) just because (s)he is friendly is, well, presumptuous. The new manager who, on day one, says, I like to think of myself as being friendly and accessible is almost certainly and rightly being perceived as ruling out being friends and tacitly warning staff against expecting or trying to accomplish that. Nonetheless, knowing that you are dealing with someone professing or perceived to be friendly can be very confusing and raise false expectations of friendship.Misunderstood warning shots can take another commonplace form (in or outside the workplace) Despite the ominous overtones of just friends, said to the jilted or otherwise rejected, it still sounds like some kind of achievement and encouragement- that, in being misunderstood, can raise false hopes and ca use serious missteps. The challenge in all these cases is to distinguish the merely friendly sheep from the true friend goat, if confusion, embarrassment, disappointment and possible serious trouble are to be prevented. As for friendly friends, somehow that notion makes sense only when describing how ones friends behave with non-friend third-parties.The (Office) Politics of FriendshipThe political correlate of friend is ally. Is an ally best understood as a nation that likes you as a friend, or merely one that will collaborate and cooperate to achieve some shared or private objective (often ultimately or secretly not your goal)? Even and especially in politics, friendly and frank meetings suggests alignment of self-serving strategic and tactical interests mora than friendship. Nothing is more frustrating and dangerous than to go to war expecting your allies to back you, only to discover that they were friendly, but not friends. In the professional arena, coworkers and the workplace it self are supposed to be friendly. Its considered nice to have and to try to become friends at work. In the world of social media, being friended on Facebook is, by the nave, taken to be the pinnacle of social success and existential validation. But how many of these friends actually care about you or are prepared to actually offer help when its needed? The dictionary explanation that a friend is1. a person whom one knows well and is hintergrund of intimate associate close acquaintance2. a person on the same side in a struggle one who is not an enemy or foe ally (Merriam Webster)is too weak, since neither of these definitions suggests helpfulness, willingness to sacrifice on ones behalf or deep concern about ones well being. As a substitute for these, fond of is rather anemic. I can be fond of you, but unwilling to make any sacrifice for you. Consider the dowager Victorian aunt, in an equally Victorian novel, who says to her wastrel nephew looking for a handout, I am very fond of you dear boy, but.As for the second definition, it sounds too much like Dubbya Youre either with us or you are with the terrorists. It rules out (friendly) neutrality of action.Conversationships and the IrishThe temptation to think that, just because you blather with friendly people online, you have friendships with them must be resisted. These are, in many cases, merely what I call conversationships (which despite their multifarious engaging functions, such as boasting, complaining, comparing, confessing, rationalizing, information mining and reassurance, are mostly friendly talk, rather than soul-melding proof of deep friendship). Then there are the national reputations Canadians (the Irish, the Chinese, Americans, the Nepalese,.) are so friendly Those who travel say and hear it all the time, yet, strangely, on reflection acknowledge that, all too often, its a case of always friendly, never friends. (Equally odd is the selective use of the when praising some countries and their people Americans will never say the Canadians are friendly, preferring Canadians are friendly. Is it because the suggests all of them, which is, at best, a friendly overstatement? On the other hand, nobody says Irish are friendly. Its always The Irish are friendly- perhaps because it is widely believed that all of them are? (Note The Scots really are friendly too.)The Concept of Being FriendishSo, how can we demarcate those who are merely friendly from those who are friends, in order to avoid overstepping those lines of expectation and behavior? One useful criterion is very easy to state A friend is someone who will actually offer you a nice day, instead of just wishing you one. (The wish is valid evidence of friendliness, not friendship.) The problem with this is that despite its clarity and conciseness, it is not as widely applied as it should be. Hence, the common mistake of assuming that friendly people want to be friends, e.g., invite you to come over and toss a shrimp on the barbie, a nd the inevitable disappointment in discovering that most have absolutely no interest in or intention of becoming friends. To the extent that the concept of being friendly is misinterpreted and over-extended to erroneously forecast friendship, it may be advisable to replace it with another concept that more clearly connotes always friendly, never friends. My proposal is to coin and use my term for this friendish. One advantage of friendish over friendly and friends is that, in being an unfamiliar concept, it forces us to pause and think about what we really mean- something that friendly (in part because of its familiarity, in part because of wishful thinking) does not.A second advantage is that it sounds like Irish, which, of course, sounds.very friendly, without any presumed promise of more than that.

Returning to work getting back on track

Returning to work getting back on track Returning to work getting back on trackPosted October 15, 2012, by Mike Kermode You may have just returned from a year of backpacking and finding yourself, or recently recovered from illness or injury. You could be finishing up a stint of maternity or paternity leave, or had some time out to tour with your band. Whatever the case, its time to get back into the workforce after a major break and just the thought of it has you daunted. How do you find a job when youve been out of the game for a while? Are you practically ready and are your skills mucksmuschenstill relevant or current? Do you have what organisations are after now? And how fresh is that old resume looking? How will you explain the break to befhigung employers? So many questions Do you still have the goods? You may well still have what it takes, but bear in mind that the longer you go without working, the harder it is to get back into the workforce. First, your skills may be o utdated. With our increasing reliance on technology and the rapid pace of technological change, this is more likely than ever before. Be it engineering, design, nursing, accounting, whatever if youre elend down with the technology, you quickly get left behind. Being outside the workplace also means youre not in touch with workplace culture and operations. Youre not participating in the systems, youre not communicating with colleagues, youre not coming up with new ideas every day and keeping up with industry developments. That is, youre neither walking the walk nor talking the talk of your industry in meaningful ways on a daily basis. You dont have a feel for the workplace in a way that makes you confident and capable. This confidence is really the key and lack of it is one of the hardest things to overcome for those who have been out of the workforce. You may have lost confidence in your abilities and be convinced that no one would hire you. If thats the case, you need to do so mething that will reinstate your own belief that you can bring something valuable to the table. Thats where additional training can help The value and importance of re-skilling One of the most important things you can do to restore your confidence is to do some training to update those tired old skills. With many job markets getting increasingly competitive, you need to ensure youre still sharp and have a competitive edge, and show employers that youve got the drive to continue your professional development. You could be an IT pro who needs additional technical credentialsto stay competitive. You might be returning to the publishing world to discover that you need new skills in graphic designor digital media. Maybe you want to pick up your administrative career where you left off and need formal training, or you want to start a new career in community servicesor project management. Whatever the case, one things for sure its far easier than ever before to stay on top of the skill s you need with additional training, and online study makes it easy and flexible, no matter what your situation. Today, there are thousands of online coursesavailable, from fully fledged bachelor degrees to certificate courses and short courses that you can complete either before you return to work, or begin when youre back in employment. Sydney-based designer and art gallery curator Lara Kern knows what its like. After travelling through South and North America, Europe and South-East Asia for 12 months, with no money upon return, she knew it was crunch time. I felt a bit behind to say the least, she says. Because I hadnt been working, I felt out of the loop it was hard to convince employers that despite having been away for so long, I was still completely capable of doing good work. Lara says she applied for loads of jobs she was certain she would have been accepted for, had she been coming straight from another job. To give herself a bit of a leg up, she decided to enrol in a n online Certificate III in Project Management. I thought, Why not? Im job hunting anyway. Doing that helped give me some purpose, and filled a hole in my career, she says. I saw it as a good way to strengthen and complement my design skills. And, she adds, it was a signal to employers that I was proactive and I was someone who knew how to get things done. Revamp your old resume If its been a while since you were last working, your resume is going to need some work. First, youll need to update your work history, which also means accounting for your time out. Dont try to avoid addressing it, hoping no one will notice that big gaping hole in your employment history because you can be sure that potential employers will. You can even use your recent experiences to your advantage. For example, casual work done while travelling say, as a bartender or English language teacher may contribute to convincing an employer of your worth, pointing to your flexibility, your adaptability a nd resourcefulness. If you took time out to have a family or care for a sick parent, you could use that to demonstrate your organisational ability and caring attitude towards others. Emphasise your skills and strengths, and use whatever experiences you can to back them up. You may also need to reframe your resume to employ new industry language or buzzwords, relate to new industry concepts or, if youre changing careers, to highlight your transferable skills in the context of your target job. Dont forget that resume structure and formatting has rolled with the times too. Times New Roman may have looked good in 1998, but these days its more likely to make you, and your resume, look dated. Whatever you do, your resume needs to be able to say, Despite my time out, Im still a fast-learning, capable and valuable employee. You need to make that resume stand out for all the right reasons. Remember, a bad resume provides a really easy excuse for employers to say no dont give them that excuse Other ways to hit the ground running Get organised and stay positive. Set routines and goals, and dont get distracted. Research whats happening in your industry, and brush up on stuff you used to know but may have forgotten. When the interview comes, try not to come across as insecure or cagey about your break from work. Speak openly and confidently about your experiences and how worthwhile they were, and show how enthusiastic (but not desperate) you are about getting back into work. Consider updating your wardrobe and look.
